The Giving Mix

Donations, Giving

online giving
How often today do you see a “no cash” sign at a checkout area?  The percentage of retailers not accepting cash is increasing.  42 states in the USA allow stores to go cashless unless local law forbids it.  Even raising funds for various causes is easiest using online platforms such as Venmo, CashApp, PayPal and Zelle.

Giving to a church online has become increasingly popular, especially after the pandemic. It offers convenience and consistency, but it also comes with some trade-offs. Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons:

Pros of Giving to a Church Online

  1. Convenience & Accessibility
    • You can give anytime, from anywhere — no need to be physically present.
    • Great for people who travel, attend remotely, or forget to bring cash/check.
  1. Recurring Giving
    • Many platforms let you set up automatic donations, ensuring consistent support for the church.
    • Helps a giver feel as if their giving is a normal part of their budget spending
  1. Easier Tracking for Taxes
    • Donors usually receive digital receipts and year-end giving summaries, making tax prep easier.
  1. Reduces Administrative Work
    • Churches spend less time counting cash, preparing deposits, and updating records.
    • Funds can be available more quickly.
  1. Encourages Younger Generations
    • Digital-native donors often prefer online or mobile giving over traditional methods.

Cons of Giving to a Church Online

  1. Transaction Fees
    • Most online platforms charge processing fees (typically 2–3%) which reduce the church’s net income unless donors cover the fees. NOTE: most electronic platforms enable the giver to cover the charges for their church.
  1. Less Tangible Worship Experience
    • Dropping something in the offering plate can feel more meaningful or connected to worship than clicking a button.
  1. Potential for Over-Automation
    • Recurring gifts can become “out of sight, out of mind,” potentially disconnecting people from the intentional act of giving.
  1. Security Concerns
    • Some people are uncomfortable sharing bank or card info online, even with secure systems.
  1. Digital Divide
    • Older or less tech-savvy members may struggle with online giving tools.
    • Unbanked people may still want to give but only have small amounts of money (perhaps only coins).

Having the Right Mix

Giving is as much for the giver as it is for their church.   You can reach many more people by making it easy for people with different preferences—digital natives, traditional givers, and everyone in between—to participate in generosity.

Here’s how you can create a flexible, inclusive giving experience:

Ways to Support a Great Giving Mix

  1. Multiple Giving Options

Allow people to give in ways that suit their comfort level:

    • Online Giving: Through a church-branded webpage.
    • Mobile Giving: Via a smartphone-friendly interface.
    • Text-to-Give: Quick and easy for regular givers on the go.
    • In-Person Tracking: Record checks or cash gifts manually, keeping all giving data in one place.

This blend ensures everyone—from tech-savvy millennials to older members who prefer writing checks or giving cash—feels included.

  1. Recurring Giving
    • Members can set up automated, recurring donations on a schedule.
    • Encourages consistency, even if someone is traveling or unable to attend.
  1. Simple Giving Experience
    • Donors don’t need to create an account to give (if online), making the process fast and barrier-free.
    • If donors do create an account, it’s “one and done” such that later giving efforts are fast and easy.
    • Mobile-friendly design makes it easy for users across age groups to navigate.
  1. Custom Branding & Messaging
    • Givers can give through a page or app branded with your church’s logo and colors. This builds familiarity and trust.
    • Givers have designated giving categories. For example, “the building fund”, “missions” or “general fund”.
  1. Keep The Offering Plate
    • You never know where someone is in their life.  Making the offering plate available allows someone to give with what they have and be as known as they want to be known.
    • Cash and checks can be tracked and managed in most church management software applications.

Giving is a vital part of the Christian faith and plays a central role in the life of our churches. It’s not just about supporting church operations—it’s a spiritual discipline, a form of worship, and an expression of love and obedience to God.  With a great mix of giving options, everyone can participate, worship, and get closer to God.
